Hillsboro, Oregon
12
miles west of Portland, Hillsboro is Oregon’s 5th largest city,
with a population of approximately 90,000. The city is the
government seat of Washington County. Advanced electronics,
solar and bio-pharmaceutical manufacturers have created a strong
economic base for Hillsboro. The fab is located in the Pacific
Northwest Region’s “Silicon Forest,” a desirable semiconductor
manufacturing region with a skilled labor force, reliable power
supply, extensive utility infrastructure and a business friendly
environment.
Utilities
A
pure and plentiful water supply and a reliable and low-cost
hydroelectric power base ensure that a substantial portion of
Hillsboro’s energy requirements are at prices well below the
national average. The major utility provider, PGE, operates
Reliability Centers, serving the high-reliability needs of
companies with power-sensitive operations, such as semiconductor
plants and high-technology operations.
Transportation Infrastructure
Hillsboro has direct access to U.S.
Highway 26 (Sunset Highway) and Oregon Highway 8 (Tualatin
Highway).
Major interstate highways in the
greater Portland metro area (I-5 and I-84), railroads, Portland
International Airport and Hillsboro Airport, and an award
winning public transportation system (including light rail) make
up the area’s well-integrated transportation system.
Labor Force
Workers in the metropolitan region are not only plentiful and
close at hand, they are also well educated, with 85% having
graduated from high school and 34% having completed college. The
region is 5th in the country for the rate of in-migration for
college-educated singles between 25 and 39.
Education
Hillsboro is home to Portland Community College, as well as the
CAPITAL Center, which offers programs for high school juniors
and seniors, customized job training for employers, and graduate
classes for state universities. The Oregon Health and Science
University (OHSU) offers specialized programs in bio-medical
science, healthcare, engineering, and computer science; and the
Hillsboro Campus is a primary provider of high-technology
engineering education and research, including nanotechnology.
Research & Development
Research occurs throughout the Oregon
University System in multi‐institutional research centers which
accelerate cutting‐edge research and facilitate public/private
partnerships to turn that research into on‐the‐ground business
opportunities.
Oregon’s Signature Research Centers
include the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnology Institute
(ONAMI), the Oregon Built Environment and Sustainable
Technologies Center (BEST), and the Oregon Translational
Research and Drug Development Institute (OTRADI).
ONAMI's community of world-class
industry, academic and federal research institutions in the
Pacific Northwest forms a vibrant network of nanoscience and
microtechnology expertise that is moving innovations from basic
research through to commercialization.
BEST
brings together Oregon's significant R&D strengths in the key
emerging areas of clean energy, bio‐based products, green
building/green development.
OTRADI is advancing drug discovery
and commercialization in Oregon with a
focus on infectious
diseases.
All of the Signature Research Centers have a precense in the
Portland Metro area.
Quality of Life
Sitting 60 miles from the Oregon Coast and 80 miles from the ski
slopes and recreation areas of the Cascade Mountains, the
Hillsboro area offers an abundance of outdoor activities, while
the city itself enjoys a vibrant cultural and arts scene.
